Our Furry Friends
We believe that every cat deserves ongoing medical care. Your donations help cover essential veterinary services, cat food and outdoor housing to keep our feline friends safe and healthy.
Furry Friends Fund not only cares for the community's homeless cats but also manages and pays for the helpers who feed our senior rescue horse, Kenny, and his goat companion, Lovebug. Your support helps us provide veterinary care, hay, and essential supplies for these two wonderful animals.
Barney Fife
Barney Fife has been on patrol at the gatehouse for at least 17 years! One of the earliest cats Ellen trapped and fixed in 2009, he’s now at least 17 years old but can finally be petted (a little!)
He doesn’t seem to like his Feralvilla outdoor cat shelter any longer, so we plan to get him a heated raised bed of some sort before next winter. Keep an eye out for him when you pass the gatehouse!
Oreo

This sweet fella was found abandoned at Wintergreen Resort. He’s been neutered, bathed, tested negative for feline leukemia, is up to date on shots and is looking for his forever home.

Daisy
Available for adoption!
Daisy lived at the Wintergreen Transportation Department for over 10 years, under a trailer for most of those. Around 2010 we got her fixed, vaccinated and started providing housing.
A new cat scared her off for almost a year until she finally showed up skinny and exhausted. She’s now in a foster home, still awaiting her forever home. Approximately 14, here she is all dressed up for Halloween 2024!
Lady Marmalade
Lady Marmalade, aka “Lady Mary,” aka “Sweetie,” was seen running along the road twice before we were able to trap her in Feb 2025.
We got her fixed, vaccinated, wormed and settled in a nearby stable where she enjoys all the activity of a boarding barn.
FFF is sponsoring Lady Marmalade’s food and vet care, an 18-20 year commitment of resources.
Kenny & Lovebug
The bond between Kenny and Lovebug is truly heartwarming. Kenny takes pride in being her protector, and their playful interactions and gentle companionship brings a smile to anyone who sees them together.
At just 13 years old, Kenny faced an uncertain fate. He was 24 hours away from being euthanized, seemingly for no reason other than lacking a home in Florida. Fortunately, a farmer in Augusta County answered the SPCA’s desperate plea and gave Kenny a home in Middlebrook, Virginia. There he joined another rescue horse, Frenchie, with whom he formed a deep bond.
Sadly, Frenchie passed away in 2024, leaving Kenny alone for the first time in over a decade. Heartbroken, he lingered by Frenchie’s grave, whinnying for his lost friend. Despite the efforts of Ellen and the other helpers to comfort him, Kenny’s distress was palpable. Horses are inherently social animals, and the loss of his companion weighed heavily on him.
Recognizing the urgency of Kenny’s need for companionship, the team began searching for a suitable friend. They found a retired Nubian goat named Lovebug at a farm north of Staunton. It turned out that Lovebug was the perfect match for Kenny, providing him with the companionship he desperately needed as he began to heal from his profound loss.
